Bach sparks debate about gameplay versus CGI trailers
Battlefield 3 developer Dice has spoken to NowGamer about its recently-released Battlefield 3 gameplay trailer.
Patrick Bach, executive producer on Battlefield 3, spoke about the use of pre-rendered, CGI trailers to promote video games, as with the recent Dead Island trailer. He said, "If you cannot market your game with your game you have a problem."
“If you cannot market your game with your game you have a problem.”
Bach explained, "Dice always wants to give the players an honest glimpse of what the ACTUAL game is."
"A thematic CGI movie might be nice to look at but that is not what you are actually buying in the end. Credibility is super important to us and to be honest, if you cannot market your game with your game you have a problem."
Bach continued, "It’s a little bit like showing someone a Ferrari and when you paid for it you get a Suzuki. Not that Suzuki’s are bad in any way but that was not what thought you bought."
The Battlefield 3 teaser trailer shows only a few seconds of – admitedly astonishing – in-game footage.
Dead Island has been causing quite a stir across the internet since Techland's CGI trailer first broke cover.
Some gamers have championed it as the greatest thing since sliced bread, while others have called foul at the use of a dead girl for shock value and its lack of gameplay footage.

As much as I like CGI trailers for video games, I have to agree with that person as it can actually misleads a game's real gameplay performance. Personally, developers should make trailers from in-game footage to attract more new potential customers.
